chosenbylight: do not take (schematise-002)

[Anduin may not be handsomely pursued by ghosts under the light of the moon, but the ruins of the Fetters make a striking background. A troubled expression darkens his face.]

As some of you may be aware, conditions in the village of Ke-Waihu have worsened in the past few weeks. I have seen animals mutate from drinking springs of the dark water, and now a drought is settling on the land. Rivers and wells are drying up, forests surrounding the village have become desiccated beyond recognition, and streams of dark water that are emerging near the fields have spread corruption into the crops faster than anyone can hold back the tide.

I have heard it whispered in the village that the solution to their woes might be to return to the old ways of appeasing Ke-Sanwon. As we have already apprehended one attempt to sacrifice a village youth to the volcano as it is, I shudder to imagine exactly what such a thing could mean.

[Anduin takes in a breath, letting it out slowly.]

The witches of the Fetters believe another cure may be to hand. It would seem that the dark waters are not the curse the villagers would have led us to believe.

Hyang-Tai tells us that these waters are some result of a fertilizing cure, shared by a visiting wanderer in white, that has since... "Regressed into a primal state", they have suggested. The witches believe there may be a way to restore it, such that it might heal the land itself. The dilemma, of course, is accomplishing this goal. They have proposed chilling the dark water into icy pools, or adding it to fresh running water. Indeed, I have a -- friend who encountered a similar pool himself. He had said that, at least while its waters were icy and cold, its waters healed him of his wounds. The fox spirits were gracious enough to lead me to a remaining spring in the forest, where I was able to add a sample and revive the surrounding glade. But much more needs to be done if we are to stand a chance of recovering the whole area of the volcano from such a state, and my own gifts are in healing, not this. I must ask for your aid.

I know we are not without our resources, as small a group as we are. Does anyone amongst us have a talent with water or ice magic, such that we might be able to accomplish such goals? Or -- I am no scientist, but perhaps there are other means of reaching such an end, without the use of spells?

[His expression hardens slightly.] As much for the crops as for those who we will spare, should the village decide to take matters into their own hands.

[An aggrieved breath brushes through Eleven's crystal. He sounds tired and annoyed in the moment, as though speaking directly to someone of something]

I'm trying to grow things, here.

For Goddess' sake, I only just planted this patch yesterday.

[He sighs, temper easing, though his voice remains underscored by a thread of tension]

..Has anyone found anything about the dark waters? How to remove them or purify them or.. something. I've been working around them much as I can, but something will surely need to be done to clear it up if this village is going to thrive after we've gone.

[He's going to leave one place better than they found it okay.

..Maybe. Hopefully]

Ah... I just want to assure anyone who might be concerned that I'm not missing.

[Hendrik, mostly, but other people who might have noticed that he doesn't appear to be with the caravan today]

I know where I am, and I'm uninjured. I've gotten one of Fox's tattoos, so if that changes, it'll become apparent.

[Because that's not at all worrying. He definitely doesn't sound nervous and a little stressed.

Metal rattles, like shifting chains. Another sound, akin to burbling liquid. Oh look, a distraction]

This is also going to sound strange, but I think the tar I've been working to collect has been following me? It doesn't seem like anyone else has noticed, but it's now taken the form of- of.. well, a tree.

..I've touched it, so I don't think it's an illusion, but I don't know what else to make of it.

[ooc: alluding to these shenanigans though El will be reticent about his (temporary) captivity to avoid stirring potential conflict]

Uh.

[She regrets doing this instantly, clearing her throat and fidgeting.]

So, we still have some chickens with us. They're-- Actually, I never did name them? We should probably give them names?

Anyway, the...rain at night is a problem, I don't think chickens are supposed to stay wet like that and I'm pretty sure the whole....blood aspect of it might be bad for them. I tried making little raincoat cloak things for them but they couldn't really stay on.

[She's quiet for a moment; there's a faint clucking noises of the chickens in her lap and a soft little laugh before Vanya seems to remember she's supposed to have a point to this.]

They're still laying eggs though, but I don't know if the blood rain thing is going to stress them out and make them stop, but I've still been gathering them. So if you want eggs... [You know, make sure the chickens are healthy!!]

Uhh... That's it. I guess I just wanted to see if there was anyone other than me and Elven that know how to take care of things like chickens, I guess. The soldiers are pretty nice? The chickens seem kind of weird about them, but...

Thanks.

[There's a long pause and then a deep sigh, Vanya muttering to herself.] Alright, great job, team. Public speaking and you didn't vomit once. You guys have it so easy. Just be fluffy and cute and lay eggs.

[There's an answer clucking and then some weird sounds that's most certainly the chickens deciding the quartz piece is a toy to fight over before the sound cuts out at Vanya's "dont'!" of alarm]

Some among us, both living and not, have been reeling from complications induced by an unfortunate meal.

While there is little I can do to help Lord Arha and his men, I can offer medicinal teas, brewed with what herbs we have. Mazyar was polite enough to offer more herbs, and anything I brew will be free, as compared to his teas.

If you are not so indisposed, the soldiers accompanying us seem to benefit from conversation.

Good day, good day. My friends, the friends of my friend, my travellers. We have journeyed together days and a nights, days! And nights.

And though many would say, Mazyar, how do you steal! Steal, like babes from the mother's teat, how do you take a convoy, dozens of men and women, beautiful, beautiful women, and the men are strapping, and the goats are good! They give us milk. And the horses are pleasing. And how do you thieve all this great offering, Mazyar, and you carry it on your feeble back, all through the customs, past the officers, past the paper-men, past the checks, past the dead! How do you do all this, Mazyar, how great is your wisdom, you, who are industrious like a god and cunning like a fox? Mazyar! Mazyar! You are a hero of stories, a thief of a thousand and one nights!

( He finally... remembers to breathe. ) But do not applaud me! Friends. Friends. I only do my duty. With greatness and ability and skill, but I only do my humble, humble duty. I take you to Taravast. But you must help me, yes? In this small thing, small, small thing, you will not notice. Just... a few guidelines, as we cross the Stairs of Sighs. For all our safety, yes? Small... small things. I ask so little! You will not notice.

A few rules — no, we are friends. A few... encouragements.

The first: you may have noticed, the... company. Of Lord Arha, who joins us in his... chivalry to escort us. Very kind! Very wonderful. Very... but you know already. Do not speak it, or else your tongue ties and your words fail a day and a night. And you upset him. There is talk... it is good, never make Lord Arha upset. Why? He is a prince, why upset princes. Royal blood, ah? Their tempers.

The second: do not make noise or sudden movement, if you can help it. There are snakes, and snakes here are vicious. And there are other creatures from the sky, and I know! I know. 'Mazyar, you! You cannot be afraid!' And I am not... but we have fowl, we have animals, and they steal. Disgusting things, they are. Careful with their claws and their beaks and their dark flesh-blood. It pools, and sometimes it burns the touch. In fact... if you are without work, and you want some coin... and I have it! I am a generous man.

Collect the tar from infected pools we pass by, in our great water barrels. We take it with us, and the schools of Taravast pay well after. The same for snakes, for exotics. The venom sells well. And if you capture a harpy... o-hoooo. My friends, gold as you cannot imagine. Not to mention, the many treasures they say lie buried in lost temple grounds.

The third ru — encouragement: mind the road down the old canyon. It is stone, yes? Only stone. But stone crumbles, the cliff-side erodes, you slip. And the walls... do not travel by them alone. Dozens of men disappeared inside the walls, never to be seen, and they say! They say. It is only a pathway to the realm of Death herself!

The fourth: our other companions. Some are from Sa-Hareth. Some... you do not ask. We are private people. I have a reputation, 'Mazyar the Humble,' 'Mazyar the Discreet.' We are not inconvenient. Some of them who left Sa-Hareth, besides... did it because Anurr was — an unfortunate development. And who helped depose their little friend, Unhalad? Aaaaaaahhhhhhh. Shhh, better we do not talk about politics, see?

The fifth: ...whoever shared the feeding before? The one that turned stomachs? You do not cook again. I! I, of course, being a man of great strength suffered nothing. But others... there were complaints. Even Lord Arha... as I said. Noble temperaments.

The sixth: the Lady Hatisse. I speak her name once, and that will be all. I do not want talk of witches in my caravan. No politics, no witches.

It is good to have you, all of you. And we will make such memories together. Please, do not thank me. I am humbled to have saved you.

( ooc: threadjack away! Feel free to take up any of the small quests Mazyar has mentioned: capturing snakes, harpies, or collecting tar from the various ponds infected with dark water. You can drop off any questions or handle OOC planning amongst yourselves here. As for temple treasure raiding... )

[Eleven's voice comes through hushed, yet tinged with urgency]

This one is asking for a mirror.

[A different, fainter voice, words heavy and slurred as through from disuse] Take me to mirror..

[Eleven audibly hesitates, his attention turning briefly away from the network as his voice lowers, softer] Are- are there more of them? The one on the ship shattered..

[A halting pause from the other side] ..End pain..

[Grief, bleeding through compassion] I will. If I can't help you, I promise.

[Eleven takes in a deep breath and clears his throat] ..I know it's probably too much to hope there's another mirror we could easily find, but he seems convinced it would help. It was said the body in the lake had a similar aura. I didn't think much of it then, but now I wonder...

Haltham says we're going to need another 50,000 or 60,000 more coins for a smuggler, travel fees, rations, and papers, and because now there's more of us. They haven't figured out where we're heading after this or how long we'll be here. It's a little frustrating. I guess the regions of this world must have a lot of border security. He also said the weather is unusually bad for this time of year, so that makes things more difficult.

But I'm not going to be able to go into town much now that I have someone that stands out a lot following me around everywhere, so it'll be hard to make more money to put toward that fund. But I am going to make myself useful and help with everything that needs done around the farm. I think it's important to work together as much as we can, so if anyone could use an extra set of hands or two with anything, please let me know.

P.S. Don't mind Hendrik too much. He only looks intimidating.
