Dear Friends,

I am presently enjailed with a number of the protestors who did not have the luck to get free of the ordered guards. Some here have been injured, and we've done what we can on limited supplies and with limited sympathy, but it wouldn't be a terrible idea to drop some fresh clean bandages in, maybe a few poultices for healing, and also:

I probably need to exit this particular stage after chatting up my cellmates for their thoughts, to the accompaniment of the odd gurgle from the semi-conscious man in the corner. Don't worry, he's actually improving.

Remember, make love! Not violence! Makes for more fertile growing grounds.

ACTION

( the performance begins before Alina even appears before the court. curtains are drawn at her request, and light extinguished throughout the room. it's not total darkness, the hour isn't late enough for that, but the darkness is well enough to be almost discomforting in a group as large as this.

that's when the only source of light in the room appears. two pinholes of light, bursting through the eyeholes of the mask Alina wears. a bright glow that illuminates her masked face in a nearly fearsome way. yet the glow slowly blossoms out underneath the mask, flowing to Alina's cheeks, down strands of her, across her neck, and filling out along her body. Alina stands as a bright light among the crowd with her light flowing all amongst her.

then suddenly the light is out again.

one ball of light appears in Alina's hand. then a second in her other hand. she spreads them apart and a third feeds off the first two to form between them.

with careful movements, Alina presses the lights out above the crowd. the three lights orbit each other in slow succession as they move over everyone. until finally they reach the center of the room. Alina spreads her arms wide, and slowly the small orbs begin to grow in size. they expand from bright, concentrated orbs, into dissipated spheres of light that begin to cover the crowd.

then finally she pulls her hands apart abruptly and the lights burst brightly over the crowd. without wasting time, Alina disappears before she can be harangued about her performance. )

POST

Please tell me we've done enough for Odile. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd rather not repeat that performance again.

Does anyone actually care who Macaluso ends up choosing?

( You might remember this voice: )

Good afternoon. To our newcomers, I introduce myself as the Merchant. You have heard of me. I have heard of you. To our elderly additions, I note you have prevailed against the odds to persist among us. A triumph.

( Dry laughter. ) Further pleasantries at a later, more forgiving time. For now, it will not surprise you that certain gestures have been entertained. Crude, direct and mercenary.

Absent a contact point, Unhalad’s lieutenants have left word with several port masters, who have conveyed his message. He believes you have been well positioned to access Anurr’s forces and woodland allies. He asks for any remnants of the mirror his brethren sent aboard the vessel Imperious and for assistance to cleanse the woods of Anurr’s supporters. In exchange, he offers free passage from Sa-Hareth once the storms clear and a letter of recommendation that will ease voyage across the eastern provinces commanded by his brothers. He threatens the full force of his allies, if you do not comply.

( A moment’s peace, to let that sink. ) I expect our forest visitors have kept Lord Anurr better informed of your whereabouts and affiliation. He has addressed my liaisons to request your assistance to shut in the salt mines and the source of Unhalad’s local force replenishments. He too offers to facilitate your departure from Sa-Hareth, once he gains the terminals, financial provisions and free return to the citadel, should you wish it done. He threatens nothing, but notes that you are alone, and have been alone for some time, and where has it brought you? ( Laughter, outright) To me.

( Second verse, same at the first. Silence is a strength. ) Quite. Given the limitations of these creatures, you will forgive me for excluding any physical evidence of these interactions.

If you want counsel: you have sustained neutrality for the better part of two months. Your position to do nothing has been self-serving, but clear. Do not stray course at the last hour. If you intend to proceed otherwise… alert me. I shall endeavour to broker the relevant agreement, so that you may at least benefit from your gumption.

You will otherwise be pleased to know I expect to receive the pertinent passport papers and two potential routes for your strategic departure within days. Until then, good day.

( ooc: feel free to use the Merchant’s or other character posts to debate the course of action! The Merchant will be scarce. If most/any characters plan to side with Unhalad, Anurr, either warlord or even both of them, designate a character to let the Merchant know. Address messages to the him this time! )

[No, he still hasn't changed his username, why do you ask? Anyway, he now has knowledge to impart on all of you, and why would he pass up on this and waste time with usernames.]

A few weeks ago, I told you of the legend that the people of this land tell about Anurr the Red. At the time I learned of it, it seemed to be an old story, passed down through several generations already, and very much embellished for the telling, and it turns out, that is very true. Our heroic tale of overcoming adversity is, as we much suspected, darker than it first looked in the folk tale people pass around.

First, it seems the building we are currently calling home used to belong to the Chieftain of that old story, and thus after his abdication, it passed down to Anurr himself, and he used it to receive tribute and give audience to merchants and ambassadors. It fell into abandonment after the number of the Old Blood dwindled. These days people avoid it to the point that even woodsmen do not venture that far into the forest. They might fear Unhalad's retaliation if they are seen to close to the land of his enemy.

As for the legend... if you remember the story I told earlier, it said that Anurr so impressed the Chieftain with his endurance of the impossible challenge that the man could do naught but hand his mantle to him. As it turns out, it's not exactly what happened. As Raven told you, the Chieftain was actually drowned by his own people, probably in that lake not far from here.

Incidentally, I brought one of the accounts book to town, and while people were able to read some of it for me, they had some difficulty with the language as it was quite archaic compared to what they are used to. This war has been going on for a long time, it seems, and Anurr the Red, whatever he is, has been around for at least that much time.

Which means we have obvious timeline discrepancies here. Some people remember the farm as being Anurr's, but not the body being in the lake at the time, even though that event should predate the other.

[Eleven's voice comes through hushed, yet tinged with urgency]

This one is asking for a mirror.

[A different, fainter voice, words heavy and slurred as through from disuse] Take me to mirror..

[Eleven audibly hesitates, his attention turning briefly away from the network as his voice lowers, softer] Are- are there more of them? The one on the ship shattered..

[A halting pause from the other side] ..End pain..

[Grief, bleeding through compassion] I will. If I can't help you, I promise.

[Eleven takes in a deep breath and clears his throat] ..I know it's probably too much to hope there's another mirror we could easily find, but he seems convinced it would help. It was said the body in the lake had a similar aura. I didn't think much of it then, but now I wonder...

Everyone, listen up. For the record, my name's Raven, since I don't know most of you.

About the body in the lake. Jiang Cheng, Vanya, and I did some further looking into his identity.

We're pretty sure that the body in the lake belongs to Anurr's predecessor. Thanks to Beitang Moran and Wei Wuxian talking to various people and sharing their findings with us, it is confirmed to be a homicide. Legend says his own people bound him and attached a weight to him before letting him sink and drown for his tretchery and injustice towards Anurr during the challenges for his mantle. A also local claims he remembers no dead body within his time being discussed about or rumored, therefore it must be a relatively new addition, if that means anything to any of you.

[ Gilbert pauses to glance at his notes. ]

As far as the familiar aura that is like the mirror coming from the body, I don't think it matters much to keep trying to figure out the link. I have theories, but I don't want to be giving anyone ideas that distract them from more meaningful efforts, especially since it's just as likely I'm wrong. I can probably locate the ship and what's left of the mirror, but considering it's in pieces and literally no one and nothing else in the Citadel has given off anything even slightly similar to it beyond where the ship was originally docked... going out of our way really seems like a waste of time, right now.

Honestly, this all looked very intriguing at first, but with the information we have now, there's nothing to really see beyond we now know who was murdered and by whom. Nothing suggests anything to worry about.

Nevertheless, I highly suggest you leave the body alone. Anyone who is linked to bring able to summon evil spirits is a wild card we don't want to piss off, dead of not.

Other things of note I found out while investigating: The weather is unnaturally early even though they have experienced early storm arrivals in the past. If Anurr really is controlling the weather like Karsa suggests, then it's safe to say he either wants someone or something to not escape him or he doesn't want a someone or something to leave the Citadel for whatever other reason. We should take the weather extremely seriously if we haven't been.

[ some page flipping sounds can be heard. ]

This is not related to the body exactly, but... I happened to notice that there's a lot of undead wandering through the Citadel, in the merchant area especially. The citizens behave towards them as if they are simply any other sentry wandering through the streets. coexistence on any level with the dead is suspicious, and alarming when to this degree. Despite that, it's also not currently linking up with our priorities. Still, it's something to be aware of going forward.

If you want to look over the notes in detail, my notebook will be in the kitchen.

[ ooc: this is a relay of the information for Karsa's task to investigate the body in the lake.. Hoping it is useful to your characters! ]
