[ Kaneki is sitting on a hammock. Besides him there is a doll, which some people may remember or may not (yes, he still has it). And the neighbour hammock is barely seen but anyone can guess what is happening: there are moans and sighs and some suspicious movement. Yes, two people are having sex right besides him. Kaneki is too tired to fight any of this. ]

Don't mind them. That's my... fortune. From the fish. [ oh yeah. kaneki has been dealing with that since the trip begun. And he is about to get to the point, when his cursed doll slowly and creepily moves her head to stare at the two sailors and she curiously asks "Father?". Kaneki just covers her eyes with his hands whispering to her "Don't look at it".

ANYWAY. ]

When I first arrived in Ellethia, I was contacted by the Merchant and he asked me to acquire something hidden on the Spina hunting grounds. [ Kaneki reaches for his bag, pulling out an actual beating heart. yes, still beating. ] This is what I found. It's not human and the Merchant says it's leverage. He never explained what to do with it and what sort of leverage it provides, but told me to keep it.

I am not getting rid of it nor I will let you borrow it, but if anyone wants to have a look, be my guest.

[ and that would be it. But Kaneki pauses again, puts the heart back and releases his daughter doll who is now quiet and no longer staring at the two sailors having sex.]

... Also.

I consume humans. [ there you go. kaneki looks away, pretending to be looking at the doll instead ] The crew isn't particularly happy about my presence and I don't expect you to be happy about it either. But I realize the word is going around and I figured there is no point trying to keep this under wraps. [ the Merchant's people DO carry dead bodies around for Kaneki, after all. Mr. Ishmael has passed and they kept the body in the ship. Kaneki himself is keeping a lot of undead body parts for later. Someone is bound to question things at some stage ]

That will be all. [ and he quickly turns off the video ]

[ Admittedly, he only half-heard what was being said due to the excess moaning. He definitely picked up the cannibalism part which is not quite so odd to him because he's used to being around vampires who mostly do the same. ]

Are we not going to discuss the background noise? Because I feel like that warrants even a small mention.

[ he sighs] A fish gave me a fortune that says everytime I try to fall asleep, there will be a... passionate couple rights besides me. Always.

[ Kaneki gestures to his side and yes the two sailors are still at it ]

Glad to see someone is enjoying our high-seas adventure. I'm almost a little envious of them at this point.

[ Not so much of Kaneki who is likely not to get any good sleep for a while. ]

And about... requiring regular sustenance, does it have to be fresh?

Good for them. [ he makes a small face. He is not happy about this at all. At first it was really embarrassing, but now he is just tired, cranky and sick of having to watch and hear whatever these sailors do at night ]

And no. I have been consuming the undead. [ and they have been rotting for a while, for sure ]

Unclear. The Merchant never gave me an exact answer and never reached out to me afterwards. I have been carrying the heart, and that's all I know.

He continues to be a mystery of his own, doesn't he? I've barely known of him for a handful of weeks, and still.

( there's a pause, then the mental shrug and the voice that seems less concerned. he's not human, so this slots right in as "hey at least one of my traveling companions has no stirring reason to eat me, the rest are still on notice." )

Huh. What're you like when you start starving?

I've not known him at all. And I don't think he wishes to be known. [ he is mysterious as he is stubborn, continuing to avoid being properly known. He refuses to expose himself more that strictly necessary, and only contacts the group if needed.

It's a pain in the ass.

That last question is followed by a pause ] Very unpleasant to be around. [ dangerous ] I do not need to feed often, however. Once a month is plenty.

( he frowns, eyes narrowing. A longer pause where he lets that disbelief draw out, before he clarifies: )

You still have the daughter's doll.

( How would Zenobius feel about that when he wakes... he sucks air through his teeth, then breathes out. )

I'd like to examine that heart if you don't mind. As far as your dietary peculiarities, do they have further limitations?

[enucleation]

It's not by choice. [ the doll has been following him and can not be destroyed. kaneki truly has no choice in the matter whatsoever ]

I'm at the Pariah currently, if you wish to meet. [ at least someone can try to figure out what the heck is going on with the heart. But that last question will get a small inquisitive glance ]

That is the limitation. [ he eats humans and that's all he can eat. He can eat them alive, dead, rotting, or just bones left. In his world, he could cannibalize others like himself, but he is the only ghoul around thus there is no point in mentioning it ]

Sounds like an unfortunate sort of predatory relationship, but I suppose my question is rather about the dead given back life but not their original spirit. Are they, ah, palatable?

Do you really think he will awake? [ how long has it been since they took the man along? Kaneki is not positive he will actually wake up.]

And yes, it's what I have been consuming here. [ actual dead bodies are great, but zombies taste pretty nice too ]

It's very reasonable if they have to share a boat with me when there is no land in sight. [ kaneki is very much aware why people would dislike him ]

Anduin supposes, in retrospect, that the signs had been there. He had not known exactly what Kaneki was -- and still doesn't, truth be told -- but this does help him put some of the pieces together.]

Most likely. Though, if Quicksilver IS consuming people in order to keep himself alive, the crew would be getting smaller.

Unless he plans on doing that when he reaches his destination.

I do not think he is consuming the crew, or the undead, but.

This does have something to do with them, and the sunken ships we are heading towards. The sunken sailors.

[ Wow. Marcos has been away on the Concord, but this wasn't the news he was expecting when he checked in.

He knew half of these things, but that's... a lot. Maybe it's because he feels like he knows Kaneki, but his biggest reaction to hearing he eats people is concern for him and how people might take that. And what happened to get him to confess.

There has to be more to that story. ]

Were they threatening you? [ He has concerns. If you're minutes away from having a breakdown, Marcos can't say they wouldn't see it coming. ]

No. I think they are too scared, in a way. [ they should be. And it's better that they are, truly ]

Marcos-san, I believe I should apologize to you. After all, I have never told you about any of this. [ not everyone takes being close to a cannibal well ]

[ Marcos has to sit with that knowledge, and weigh it against the fact that Kaneki has never attacked him or anyone else in their group. It doesn't sound like he's killing who he eats. He's kind of glad he's finding out where Kaneki can't see his face, but he isn't the type to condemn someone for something they can't control. ]

...It's probably not easy for you to talk about. [ Who knows if he would have reacted differently if he'd walked in on him eating before he got to know him. He's not even sure how to approach this now, but he's at least trying to imagine what that must be like. ]

How long has it been that way?
