video (un: man's greatest treasure)

[the video shows a very close up angle of her face, because someone hasn't bothered taking the pendant off to film this. there is a thin balance between amusement and panic on her face, too. she draws in a breath and:]

May have made a mistake.

[from beyond the video, a bird interrupts her confession almost on cue:]

CA-CAW

[she angles the video quickly to a murder of about ten crows in the grass, at her feet, looking up at her. she brings the video back to her face.]

Umm. I fed one. It followed me three days ago, and I had some biscuits in my bag, and I unthinkingly fed it. The next day it brought two friends over. The next day, they also brought friends over. [it's a pyramic scheme of crows.] And now this. [there's a bit more caw-ing in the background, and the camera shakes while she moves to clearly feed them again, because she doesn't know any better.]

Also one swooped down to nip at a villager's hat today because he was looking at me, so I think I might have a murder. Of crows. On my hands. [she's secretly pleased with that wordplay.]

I was, actually. [And she is quick to snap now, no-nonsense tone.] I didn't come up with that solution, my professors did. Trusted adults who saw a thirteen year old eager to attend more classes than time would allow her thought the best solution for it was to sign her up to get a Time Turner. Was it a good idea? Of course not.

[It put time travel in the hands of a very young child! And don't get her started on Dumbledore effectively telling her and Harry to use it to save Sirius.]

The wizarding community at large is insane, but it happened, so that's that.

[ It's the right thing to say. At least she agrees, even if she doesn't seem to grasp the gravity of what she was messing with. He can attest to how insane that actually is, but he's also not unfamiliar with adults pushing children beyond their limits.

But even Reginald warned Five against time traveling before he was ready. He made that tragic mistake all on his own. Now he's a walking cautionary tale. ]

[ In another time and place, Five might have been assigned to kill her and any number of her community for mucking with the timeline. So yes. Directly or indirectly. ]

Good guess. I might even be an expert on the subject.

On account of what, being the only one of your kind, wherever you're from?

[somebadnews]

On account of studying it my entire life. [ His LONG life, thank you. And 'his kind', the hell does that mean? ]

I'm not the only one. I'm just the only who can do it without help.

[a long pause. looooooooong. and then low, muttered,]

Okay, I'm glad I didn't screw up using the time turner.

Probably because it wasn't designed to let you.

[ He's thinking it's like the briefcases and he's 100% sure nobody using those had any inkling of how they actually functioned. ]

So...how old are you, actually?

[Seems like the most reasonable follow up.]

[ He almost says fifty-eight, then remembers how long he's been here... shit. At least he'll be out of puberty soon.

[ There's a moment or two of silence before he sighs. He's not going to be inviting everyone listening in to his pity party. ]

You're just going to need to trust me on that.

[reparo]

...will you? Trust me, that I know what I'm doing and that I haven't exactly gone around time travelling since?

[somebadnews]

[ Of course not. He doesn't even trust the people he trusts. ]

You wouldn't be tempted, if you had the option?

[reparo]

[She lets out a laugh, bitter.]

You've known me long enough to know the answer to that would be yes. But I know the idea would be stupid, and desperate, and I'd rather fight for the present to have a future, than to change the whole past to something worse.
