What funerary rites are you familiar with?

The Kaldorei cleanse a body, perform a final viewing where there is singing then take it to a resting place and grow flowers around it. Goblins have extravagant funerals with mourners and ornate coffins which they are buried or entombed in along with all their accumulated wealth. In Kul Tiras burials at sea are common, while the Tauren peoples burn their dead on funeral pyres so their spirits may return to the Earth mother.

Here, burials appear to be common I have gathered.

Time was when we buried people. The bones of the lords of my father’s house, and their families, were laid to rest in the crypt, and servants in the lichyard. The lords and kings are remembered with statues, though my father went against custom and remembered his sister with one, too. All of it is going into the earth.

It is better to burn the dead now.

It depends on the family and the cultural choices, I think. Also the time period. Viking funerals are a lot like your Tauren people's one, for example. But nowadays, we bury them in a coffin in the ground, and set up headstones for those who are still alive to mourn at.

Some people prefer cremation to burial, and the ashes are either scattered somewhere of significance to the deceased, or put in a sort of cementary for urns, with the headstone again.

That's the general intent, but it stops being a mourning...after a while. At a point, you just visit.

It kinda depends on what religion you follow, where I'm from, but like, most the time it involves burying someone in a coffin. Usually, there's a little religious service, beforehand, and people come in to look at the body and 'pay their respects' or whatever.

Me, I wanna go out on a MOUNTAIN of TNT.

Launch my body into space, man.

[Wrathion has already listed many of the traditions of their homeworld, but. That is not to say that Anduin cannot share more specific details of the funerary rites of Stormwind itself. He is perhaps more intimately familiar with them than he would otherwise care to be.]

Memorials are also commonly erected, for those who wish to visit and pay their respects.
chosenbylight: do not take (161)

[personal profile] chosenbylight 2022-03-05 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Well. Not everyone no. There are cemeteries, in Stormwind and the towns beyond. Families usually at least mark the graves with a stone, if they cannot afford more. The noble families usually have more ornamentation -- decorative statues or plants.

I suppose I just meant to point out that there are times when we are not able to bury our dead. Those who are lost at sea. Those who have died in battle. And in those instances, we do what we can to honor their memory, through whatever methods or means we can, whether it be erecting a statue, planting a tree, or something as simple as setting out flowers.

[There is a part of Anduin that wishes Lion's Rest were somehow less... Public. But he understands that it was constructed as much for Stormwind and its people as for Varian Wrynn, and he will have to find solace where he can.]

I don't know how much it matters, unless you want to make use of the bodies and spirits still. Or ensure no one else can.

Perform rites. Remember them. Take note of resentful energy and either put it to rest or harness it.

Why would the dead be more difficult than the living?

They've fewer needs, broadly speaking.

Burials are the most common form of disposing of the dead where I am from, but some people out in the desert do prefer cremating their dead and scattering their ashes int he sand.

The customs here are relatively similar to what I am used to, with a few differences.

[personal profile] beitangmoran 2022-03-06 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Tradition, I suppose?

My people believe the body should be preserved so it can be reborn in another life. But ancestor worship is also not done at the grave, but inside the house, mostly.

We have a wake, and then the person is cremated before they're put in the family grave.

There's a lot of ceremony and food, too, usually.

Most families have a monument with their names engraved on it, and the urn with their ashes is placed in a vault or something under it.
