What funerary rites are you familiar with?

The Kaldorei cleanse a body, perform a final viewing where there is singing then take it to a resting place and grow flowers around it. Goblins have extravagant funerals with mourners and ornate coffins which they are buried or entombed in along with all their accumulated wealth. In Kul Tiras burials at sea are common, while the Tauren peoples burn their dead on funeral pyres so their spirits may return to the Earth mother.

Here, burials appear to be common I have gathered.

In a manner of speaking. Grief is not something I have had the luxury of indulging, the dead are beyond my remit, but it seems here the needs of those long passed still require attention.

I can understand that.

( To put it mildly. Emilia set aside her own grief to embrace her anger instead. Her mission, too. )

I take it your desire to learn more about funerary rites has little to do with a newfound desire to indulge.

The ancestor I am to atone for apparently allowed graves to be desecrated through negligence. A better understanding of common funerary customs seemed a wise starting point before investigating further.

The ancestor I am to atone for is predictably no better. He wasted his family's inheritance away and neglected the estates, starving the people he was meant to feed and employ.

I do wonder if these people do not have family to atone for their own ancestors.

In the case of my ancestor, he did not. Though I'm not sure it would have been too difficult to find a volunteer. Those who've spoken to me, at least, are fervent in their willingness.

( She thinks back to the villager lady on arrival day. The three curses she'd taken upon herself, the tells of each of them upon her. )

I find willingness to shoulder the sins of an another so easily... unusual.

There is no one you'd shoulder a great burden for?

People who have earned that, yes. These are the sins of a stranger.

[valeas]

They are not strangers to each other. Not as we are strangers to them, at least. But it's true their belief is incurious. When I first refused to drink the brew, they could not understand why.

They are certainly... ardent in their belief. Curses and atonement for sins appear to be a core tenet of their culture.
