Elaborate on the burlap dolls. Also, not sure what you mean by everything is 'dead or alive or in between'. Isn't that just... how life states work? Is there a third option outside of dead or alive where you come from?

Where I'm from, who knows. Here? Talk to the people who see these things, I can only tell you what I smell. People rot too fast to have ever been alive shortly before, and others are wrong, deeply wrong, when they stop moving.

The things which tell you, that person lives, that person is a corpse, you don't get those right in Serthica. You get numbed to any difference, until they show up in a morgue.
