Tying them up until they return to normal, probably. From the accounts of the spirits the loss of control doesn't appear to be violent so no one should be hurt by this course of action.

I believe that I don't know enough to say. However, if whatever had affected the captains in the past can do that to one person it makes sense it could happen to others.

It's better to be too cautious than not enough.
