The Stairs of Sighs are named after our ghost general Arha, for the sighs of pining between himself and his lover, Hatisse. I think even now, the Bessis and what is it, the Attareal? Are lines of magical learning in Taravast. Has anyone talked with anyone of the refugees or the ghosts to confirm or deny?

I didn't say either of those things, I said if you were both unable because of what else you're doing, why wouldn't he be a choice? Empathy gone wrong needs someone there to call the mind back. A strong heart isn't necessarily enough.

You're not wrong that he's not blessed with patience. Just give credit: Empathy is his clan's teaching, and he trained his nephew well enough that he could use a Jiang bell to pull me back.

If needed. Either way, at the moment it's a moot point, I'm not yet trying to empathy a flying creature, let alone a non-present Hatisse.

Her magics, Lan Zhan, I hadn't asked after them, but what were they? Likewise to the rest, what is within her capabilities to do? Or was at the time?

They're protected, to never know the outcome... but I have to presume never are allowed to reach their end goal, either. They don't know they died. This isn't righting that wrong, by completing what they couldn't do while living—at least not directly.

Possible, yes. Protection of a kind offered too late to change the outcome, in another way. Could be unwillingness to part, not wanting to let go. I don't know that this world operates on similar principles to reincarnation as our own.
