Well, they were tortured in the attempt to make them immortal.

See, one of the immortals I know is my bodyguard, Manji.

[ And of course this is a text-based conversation, so Vanessa can't see it, but Rin has to stifle a sob at the thought of Manji. At the thought of being separted again when they were just reunited. It aches in her heart. ]

He was captured by someone who works closely with the government and used for experiments to try and transfer his immortality to other people. Many people were used in these experiments. Many lives lost. Others survived, but came out irreparably changed. It was gruesome.

It'd be a pretty long and convoluted story to get into, but when it comes down to it, it was a combination of a calculated risk and lots of luck, if I'm honest.
