So turns out even helping citizens being brutalized by the Hand assholes can get you locked up in the slammer for the night. I'm trying real hard not to turn into a three-headed dog-monster and break out of here, just gonna do my time until tomorrow morning, cause otherwise there's no way some innocents won't get caught in the crossfire. Maybe some of you might be up for distracting a gal?

See, there was this drinking game we'd play at the bar: What the fuck is up with that?

Gotta make some adjustments for a network, but just chime in on this post if you wanna play. Other people will ask you, What the fuck is up with ____insert-thing-here-about-you_______? and then you're supposed to answer honestly or drink if you don't want to answer it. Obviously you could still just lie, but then you're a coward. If you're not into drinking, you can think of some other way to punish yourself for not answering.

But for instance, you might ask me, "What the fuck is up with you being able to turn into a three-headed dog-monster?" Or you might ask a friend, "What the fuck is up with your hatred of chickens?" or "What the fuck is up with you being so tall?" Sky's the limit. One time a guy asked another guy, "What the fuck is up with you being so handsome?" and that kicked off a whirlwind romance for them.

Just a way to way to pass the time while we wait for people to be handled and for the beacon to be activated for those who actually want to head home, and you'll be saving the city from the wrath of me so, y'know, an easy way to be a hero.

Me and my captain were spotted by the Chained God's temple shortly before it died. It's helpful when you need to get out of a bad spot - or if you like making money easily.

You can still ask what the fuck is up with that guy. There's technically no true end to the game. Usually, it stops when someone gets drunk enough to pass out or someone's a little too honest and a fight breaks out.

So I'll ask, what the fuck's up with you having a captain?

I'm the navigator on a pirate crew, can't have a crew without a captain.

Pirates are fucking cool. Definitely asking more about the pirate thing, but first...

The Merchant. Can't say I'm an expert. I do know he funds us traveling around this world to places with more beacons, always puts us in important positions in the cities we go to (for the most part, one time I was digging up worms), and then sometimes gets mad when we get too involved or involved in a way he doesn't like. The city he's from was destroyed by the dead, and the dead want to use us as weapons against this world so he's got a vested interest in getting us out, but it does seem more complicated than that. He's also got some kind of history with the guy in white, Matthias, who's like responsible for everything.

They're a mixed bag, depends on the pirates, but you can ask me whatever you want about that.

Mm, true. Life is like a box of pirates. You never know what you're gonna get.

He made the dark water. He made the Undead Brotherhood that are currently destroying/taking over the world and would happily use us as their weapons. That's my understanding of it all at least so definitely responsible for some of what's going down in the city.

Most of the time you get violent shitheads, sometimes you get guys like my captain.

So...he's the one who summoned the dark water through the mirrors like that one guy said happened? [ She means Wei Wuxian, she just didn't get a name. ]

Yeah, I miss some of the details sometimes but that sounds about right, summoning it through, spreading it around the world. Almost every place we've been has been a mess, and almost every place has had its own resource of dark water causing it. Sometimes it does good things, I hear, which is weird, but if it's whole thing is to create then I guess it'll be as good or as bad as what it's exposed to.

The Chained God's book talked about how there are more divine forces in this world, did you ever go anywhere they were present while the dark water was around?

Piracy is a big part of the world I come from, and for the most part pirate captains are the worst kinds of people, but - Luffy isn't that. Piracy means more to him than greed and power. A lot of captains treat their crew like they're replaceable, sometimes they even kill them themselves, but, Luffy would never do that, he cares about us, and the things we want for ourselves.

There was a different snake god in another place we went to, but I didn't meet them. Otherwise there hasn't been much even when it comes to people worshipping shit.

...piracy being a big part of any world seems like it could get pretty fucking chaotic, but it sounds almost like you guys are a family instead of a crew. Shit, it wouldn't be safe to be on a crew where you're replacable. Might as well go it alone or not be a pirate then. And this Luffy seems like a real good guy if he treats all of you like that. Are you close?

They call it the Great Pirate Era back home. It's not safe, but, a lot of times people don't really have a choice. Not everywhere, but in a lot of places, you're either a pirate, a marine, or totally screwed. The whole crew is good, even if they make me crazy. [ And she's not gonna answer that last question! Sorry Red, you're going to have to level up your Social Link for that. ]

Over a year. It's hard to keep track of time. I got sent home once through the beacon - a couple of decades in my world, a blink of an eye here. It was disorienting to say the least.

Yeah. Sounds like a shitty situation with no good options - kind of like where we're at here in this damned city. I'm glad you found a good crew. Pretty sure that's a family and/or friend thing, you like them, but they'll still make you crazy sometimes. In a good way.

So then, they do work? It's not just a thing they're telling us will happen?

I've never had friends before, it's kind of nice, kind of annoying. You should come visit some time, meet them for yourself.

Have you ever heard of the story of the scorpion and the turtle? Or fox, or frog, there's several versions.

A scorpion and a turtle meet at the bank of a river. The turtle knows it can swim the river. The scorpion knows it can't. For this and that reason, the turtle offers to carry the scorpion across the river, so they each might continue their journey. The scorpion accepts.

When they're halfway across, the scorpion lifts its tail and stings the turtle in the soft skin of its neck.

Anyway, our Master Scorpion shared the tail with me in describing himself. It's worth keeping in mind.

What serves his end is to weaken the Brotherhood and Matthias. He keeps us from their easy grasp for that reason. Don't mistake it for anything more.

He's never in reach. The ones who are his emissaries would be the likes of Karsa, ah? Master Scorpion is always ahead of us, further east.

But you all roam from place to place taking up the roles, causes, and jobs he gives you? Has anyone just refused?

Some. The real difficulty is getting in a place to procure both a beacon and know the location of it's gateway. His connections do set us up for that, and in lands we're all strangers to, those connections aren't to be ignored. Or blindly trusted.
