So I've been seeing a lot of talk around here where people don't seem to know what a pirate is. Do your worlds not have oceans or...?

( Luffy pauses before shrugging, his enthusiasm never dimming. )

Anyway I thought as future king of the pirates it's my duty to let everyone know what a pirate is, saves any confusion down the line and kind of breaks up things that are happening. So! Here goes! Are you ready? Here's some stuff that makes a pirate a pirate!


One! Being a pirate is about being free. No-one can tell you what to do or what you should be. You choose where to go and how to do it, feeling the wind at your back and enjoying the ride. For some reason the marines don't like this bit, not sure why. Something about some laws, I dunno.

Two! Having a ship is very important. ( Luffy nods at this one as he folds his arms. ) Can't sail without one but not only that, a ship is part of the family. We live on the ship and she takes us to where we need to be. We look after her and she looks after us. Also it's very important your ship has the best name. Mine is called the Going Merry in someone's honour.

Three! Speaking of family, gotta have a good crew at your side and I'm not biased when I say mine's the best and I could never imagine a better group of people. My crew are the Straw Hat pirates and I have a navigator, a swordsman, a sharpshooter and a chef. Pirates can sail solo but they tend to be lonely over it. I mean who would they even share their treasure with when they find it?

C. Er, four! Treasure. Every pirates wants to find treasure. Personally I think treasure can be anything, from gold and riches to memories, thoughts and the people around us. Everyone has their own treasure worth chasing! Though I have since found out from experience that thoughts and memories don't pay restaurant bills. Or promises to come back and pay it once I find some gold and riches. Not sure why though. At least the dishes got done....mostly.

(Does Luffy ever run out of breath or get tired of his own voice? Apparently not.)

Five! A jolly roger. Every pirate crew has one and most have their own brand too. That way we can all tell whose ship we're looking at without having to get too close. Mine has a straw hat on it, and soon everyone will know it.

Six! Bounties. Every pirate aspires to have a bounty on their head from the marines. You get this really cool poster with your picture and they put them on walls around the world. I just got mine, I don't even remember them taking my picture but it's definitely mine. It's the best, I've always wanted one.

I think that's a good start but ask questions, I'll answer them. Thought I'd keep this one short you know? Being a pirate is the best feeling in the world and once I have a ship here anyone is welcome to come onboard and see for themselves!

Wow your version of piracy sounds like so much fun! Ammi would kill me if I became a pirate tho :( She won't even let me pirate old shows you can't get anymore legally. :((((

You should probably pay those restaurants since that's not cool or make friends with a Desi mom. No one has ever gone hungry in a Desi household. I'm just saying!

If you can't get a thing anymore then I'd think being a pirate and finding it is a good thing for everyone? You should tell Ammi that. Otherwise they'll never see the thing.

( He tried, but the concept of shows and legalities is way above his intelligence paygrade. )

I did enough chores and it was just the one restaurant. I didn't know they wouldn't take a treasure tab at the time and there were so many dishes. I think Zeff said it was a years worth.

Of course, if I have a bounty on my head it means I'm doing it right.

If I'm caught? ( Luffy's grin widens. ) I just escape and watch my bounty get higher.

That sounds amazing! Your people do that?

[ Though they also had fishing villages and places like that too. However, Luffy has him curious. Especially as he goes on to explain what exactly a pirate is. ]

What is a treasure that you are chasing? What exactly is a jolly roger?

[ He pauses for a moment. ]

You say that every pirate crew has one but what is it?

[ Of course... bounties on one's head is not something one should strive for, not in his opinion. ]

Why would you want bounties on you? Could that not get you killed?

(Luffy can't help but grin at all the questions. He loves it and takes a moment to think on which to answer first.)

A bounty is something that can get pirates executed, but if we weren't good pirates then no-one would notice, right? Keeps us on our toes!

You don't know a jolly roger? Hold on —

(Luffy grabs some paper and starts scribbling something as he talks.)

Treasure can be anything. I'm looking for a treasure called the One Piece which was left by the pirate Gold Roger. Everyone's been looking for it, but I'm gonna be the one to find it.

(There's another moment of drawing before Luffy holds up a terribly drawn emblem, resembling this and just as terrible.)

It's a flag! They always have a skull and crossbones and then we can add to it depending on what the crew is about!

Matter of fact, I've dabbled in a bit of pirating myself.

Not just wanna, I am going to be king of the pirates and right now I have the highest bounty in the East Blue.

(Not that it means much to anyone here, but he can at least recognise as such, giving a small shrug and a grin. It's kind of hilarious that he already has a wanted posted here too, a small one for stealing a boat when in reality it had been gifted.

Oh? I mean you gotta really put the effort into naming a boat or a ship, wait for it to come to you. Rushing into it will only be a problem. Maybe your boat wasn't ready for a name.

Jolly roger is our flag. Normally black with skull and crossbones on it, but we all change them depending on who's flying it. Like mine has a straw hat!

Having a wanted poster is pretty exciting, but let me tell you from experience, the novelty wears off when the bounty hunters take a liking to you.

I mean some would think it's a problem and inconvenient, but I think it just adds more excitement to our journey.

By finding the One Piece. Everyone's looking for it, but I'm gonna be the one that finds it.

Well sure, and people who want to follow them like to join the marines. One of my best friends is a marine, he's doing amazingly too. But that isn't for me.
