( 2am crazy ideas should never be allowed but here she is, only marginally more fleshed out and with a partner in crime )

I’ve seen some of the magic here, dragons and people that can use it, but is all magic the same? Can everyone that uses it do the same things or is it different in every universe?

( she told him she was going to learn everything about it )

The physics of this universe are different to the one I know, anything like magic doesn’t exist there but something makes this world different.

(Ok so it wasn’t the most eloquent phrasing, maybe he could help polish it up a little bit)

I haven’t been here long, so I haven’t seen any magic first hand, but from what I know of the mythologies of my world, everything works a little differently…and some things are thought to be magic and end up having a plausible explanation. So how can we tell what is magic and what might have a scientific explanation?

(or maybe not.)

( she tips her head to the side to look at him with a no kidding kind of look )

If magic is biological in nature, children’s stories aside, what makes it different to… superhuman strength? ( not at all using herself as an example there ) Or different organ placement. Can it be replicated with enough knowledge?

( una )

And if it can, would it give us an advantage in this place or at the very least, can we get magic and science to work together?

( that’s the question. from all of the different universes, with all of the different kinds of magic can they work together? she shrugs slightly because he summed it up pretty well: what magic do you know, does technology work/exist/etc in your universe? or just educate their silly space brains about magic )

I suppose I could ask what you consider the limits of science, by your own definition.

Both, broader.

You ask if science and magic can work together, and the obvious answer is yes. The question is what you want to achieve with it. You need a clearer goal than 'advantage'. All knowledge gives an advantage, but what is it you want to achieve? Magic can achieve many things. There is no way you will learn every possible combination of abilities, every possible outcome. Each world has different subsets, different styles. Start with a smaller, achievable goal. If you wanted to replicate something specific, what would it be?

Way I see it, science, it's like a hammer, right? Only does one thing. Maybe two, if you use the claw. But it always does what it's told.

Magic has moods. Magic does what you believe it will. If you think it's limited, it is. Only rule for magic is, there's always a price.

[ Genetically? This is such a peculiar approach. ]

I believe the latter, but can only speak for my own understanding.

Got it in one.

There's more to it than that. It's based on more'n just one belief, like. Cultural practices, innit.

You wish... to study those possessed of magic?

Study sounds like we want to perform experiments. Not like that. I'd rather ask questions. I want to learn from people who have experience with it.

How does it work? Are there genetic dispositions that make it easier or harder for someone to use it? How important is the magic user's intention when working with it? I'm sure there're other questions I can't think of now.

( he sounds slightly hoarse, but that's just a constant now. the wry tone's pretty usual though: )

I'm as magical as a post, but science and magic are currently keepin' me upright, so I'd say they can successfully complement one another.

Good luck getting 'magic' to show concretely on a tricorder though.

[Una's told him about McCoy, so he recognizes the username.]

I don't think it will, unless we can recalibrate it somehow, but we might lower its battery life by doing so.

Just what's relevant. You use a book of names, you better get the names right. Use Enochian, make sure nothing's misspelled.
