That depends how strictly the child was trained in the religious practice itself. Sometimes, people can believe strongly enough that they'd excuse even the offering of their own lives -- or the taking of those they care for. It's entirely possible he did believe he was doing something good and righteous, by offering his life. It's equally possible he lived in the house of ravens, stewing in resentment against a mother who abandoned him.
